BEFORE YOU REINSTALL

  1. Be sure you have a copy of the AOL 4.0 SETUP95.EXE file. If you don't have one on your computer or you think the one you have may be corrupted, click here to download a fresh copy:  Download AOL 4.0 (this is an AOL link, you must be signed on to AOL to use it).

  2. Click NOW in the upper right corner.

  3. Click on Accept

  4. Click Yes if you meet the system requirements.

  5. Click Download Now to begin the file transfer.

  6. When the file transfer is complete, you will see an upgrade sign, and the files will extracted. Be patient, and do not interrupt this process. . You will be logged off AOL, and you will see the Welcome To America Online screen.

Installing America Online version 4.0 for Windows 95/98:

On the "Welcome to America Online" screen:

  1. Click on Add an existing account to this computer. This option ensures that nothing is transferred over from an existing AOL directory; you will have a clean install. Click Next.

  2. The program will automatically scan your system to find AOL. You will see this message: "There is a copy of AOL on your computer. Do you still want to install this same version." Click Yes.

  3. On the Select AOL Directory screen, you will see the name of the new AOL4.0 directory. Note what it is! Click Next.

  4. On the Select AOL Startup Options screen, if you want an icon in the start menu, click Next. Or deselect that option and click Next.

  5. On the Disk Space Check screen, click next to begin the installation of the files.

  6. When the installation is complete, click Finish.

  7. AOL will ask if you want to sign on. Click Yes.

  8. You will get an AOL Setup window. Be sure that Begin Automatic Setup is selected, and click Next. AOL will take you through a series of screens to configure your dial up settings, including choosing your access numbers.

  9. Sign onto AOL, click the Help menu, then click About America Online. You should see the new revision number there; then sign off and close AOL completely.

If you want to trasnfer your PFC and your Favorite places from the old America Online 4.0 folder, copy the ENTIRE Organize folder (not the contents, but the folder itself) from the old AOL4.0 folder into the new AOL 40 folder. You will be asked if you want to replace the existing directory. Click Yes to All.

If you have any other files in the old America Online folder (wav files, or anything in the Download folder), you can copy those to the new AOL folder as well.

Once you are certain that AOL is operating properly, you can delete the old America Online 4.0 directory.

IMPORTANT:
Now, sign on as a "New User," without any TPA Software program running. Once online, enter your screen name and password in the boxes for them on the Registration screen. All your current account info and screen names will be transferred to your new software. If you do not sign on with this new software, the TPA Software program will not recognize this AOL installation, and you will get an error message that youu dont have a valid account. This is what happens when the program sees "New User" at the sign on screen.

Sign off and exit AOL. You may get a number of TOD Downloads. Do not disturb these...just let them download.

After you upgrade AOL you will need to inform whichever TPA Software program of the new AOL directory. Please refer to the READ ME file that came with the program and reference the Choose AOL Version to Run section!
