What
are Moderator's Tools?
by Kevin
Provance
Moderator's Tools is a great new way to expand chat room management! This new feature is only available with WavMan Professional. To take advantage of this new tool and are still using older versions of WavMan, you'll need to upgrade to WavMan Professional.
When an AOL member creates a private room or a member room in the People
Connection, they become the Room Owner, with the ability to "eject" and "ban"
people from the chat room, and also to completely close the chat room they have
created. A lightning bolt icon is displayed next to the Room Owner's name in the
People List. If you are the Room Owner, you will also see the AOL "Eject" and
"Close" buttons.
Room Ownership is an AOL feature, not a WavMan feature.
However, WavMan Pro enhances AOL's Room Owner tools, adding a number of useful
features.
The Moderator's Tools can be accessed by clicking the "Chat and E-Mail" button in the WavMan toolbar and selecting "Moderators Tools". Although you will be able to adjust these preferences and edit the various lists in this feature, you will only be able to use them if you have created the chat room and have a lightning bolt next to your name in the People list.
The Moderator's Tools gives you the option to promote other members of the chat room to Moderator or Regular, or to ban them outright. Each of these three options can be enabled or disabled independent of each other for additional flexibility. This may be accomplished in the "Scan Preferences" window. Access to these options can be obtained by clicking the "Scans" item in the tree view at the left of the Moderator's Tools window.
To enable the ability to assign Moderators to your chat room, check the check box labeled "Enable Moderators".
To enable the ability to assign Regulars to your chat room, check the check box labeled "Enable Regulars".
To enable the ability to ban members from your chat room, check the check box labeled "Enable Bans".
Each of these three features also carry the following options:
The final scan preference is labeled "Send notification to chat when kicking". When checked, a message will be sent to the chat room informing the targeted member they are about be to be kicked.

Adding/Removing
Moderators and Regulars
There are two ways to add chat members to the Moderator, Regular or Banned
lists.

Banned Words & Phrases
If you would prefer to have your chat room monitored for Banned
Words or Phrases, you'll need to activate the feature by clicking the
check box labeled "Scan for Banned Words & Phrases". Assigned
Moderators may use banned words.
If a chat member (or chat bot) has been tagged for using any of
the Banned Words or Phrases, you'll need to select an action to take. You
can select this action under the "Action to take" label. You may choose
from one of the following:
Ignore
This action will instruct WavMan to place this member on ignore.
They will still be in the room acting disruptive, only you will not see it.
Everyone else will.
Kick
This action will instruct WavMan to kick the offending member out of the
chat room. A kick is a warning and the offending member could come right
back in.
Session Ban
This action will instruct WavMan to use AOL's "Eject Member" feature to
ban the member for the life of the chat room. Once the chat room
empties, they will be able to re-enter the room at any time following.
Perm Ban
This action will instruct WavMan to place this member's screen name into
the permanent ban list. Each time the offending member enters the chat
room, they will be kicked out and their name re-added to AOL's "Eject Member"
queue.
Ask
Instead of taking action, a small popup window will open at the bottom of
your screen detailing the offending member's screen name and what their
violation was. You may then take one of the above actions by clicking
the appropriate link.
Do nothing
Pretty much says it all.
WavMan tends to be fair, if you let it. Two additional options have been added with this feature.
Warn once before action
Tick this check box if you wish to enable this feature. It send a
warning into the chat room addressed to the offender and the reason for their
warn. The next time they repeat the violation, the selected action you
chose will be implemented.
Kick after warn.
If you really want to send a message with your warning, ticking this check box
will accomplish this. After the on screen warning, the offending member
will be kicked from the chat room. Of course they will have the ability
to return immediately, which is why it's regarded as a warning.
Everyone's style of managing a chat room is different, so adjust these options
that best suit you! :-)
In additional to a user defined set of Banned Words and Phrases, WavMan is able to weed out some standard annoyances on it's own, provided you tick the appropriate check box for said options. Here are other examples of criteria WavMan can scan for:
A/S/L
When activated, this option will scan for members who advertise their
age/sex/location (example: 38/m/FL) or solicit (example: a/s/l) and take the
action chosen in the "Action to take" list.
Profanity
While WavMan is fully capable of filtering out profanity via the banned
"Words & Phrases" list, due to the sensitive nature of some of these words, we
felt it was a better idea to be able to add these words separately via their
own optional feature. Checking the "Profanity" check box will cause
WavMan to take the selected action chosen in the "Action to take" list again
any member who uses a profane word. WavMan has been preinstalled to scan
for the standard list of profane words and their variations.
To edit this list of profane words, you will need to check the "Edit
Profanity" check box. WavMan will display a warning message that the
words you are about to read and edit could be offensive in nature. If
reading such language offends you, you can click the "No" button when
prompted.
After the list box has been unhidden, additional words may be added by typing
it into the list box and clicking the "+" button. Words may be removed
by selecting the word in the list box and clicking the "-" button.
Note: WavMan gives you the clear option of
avoiding the reading and editing of profane and potentially offensive words.
If such language offends you, you have the option to not view or edit these
words. Please do not send complaints to tech support about seeing this
list of words if you opt to do so. The list of profanities was necessary
to be able to action members who use them. Precautions were taken to not
show this list of words by default and to give warning when said list is about
to be displayed and accessible.

CAPS Lock
If you would prefer to have your chat room monitored for members typing in ALL
CAPS (which is considered "shouting"), you'll need to activate the feature by clicking the
check box labeled "Scan for CAPS Lock". Assigned
Moderators may use ALL CAPS.
If a chat member (or chat bot) has been tagged for using ALL CAPS, you'll need to select an action to take. You
can select this action under the "Action to take" label. You may choose
from one of the following:
Ignore
This action will instruct WavMan to place this member on ignore.

queue.

Lastly, you may adjust the threshold at which WavMan will recognize what constitutes a chat line of ALL CAPS. This threshold is measured in terms of percentages. The variance can be set between 5 and 100 percent of the chat line. For example, if you set the threshold to 50%, at least 50 percent of the incoming chat line will need to be in ALL CAPS before any action will be taken.

Finally, you can adjust the threshold at which WavMan will determine how many lines in a period of seconds will constitute a Chat Flood violation. The amount of chat lines can be set between one and ten. The number of seconds between one and ten. For example, if the threshold is set at "Max 5 lines in 4 seconds", any member entering five lines of chat within four seconds will be actioned.
